Another gem

June 25, 2016

Of David! Among the many things he noted he said: Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. The typical way to read it is forward, as something projected into the future. That if one pleases God, all one’s deepest longings will be fulfilled. And that it of course is. But where the words come from seems interesting. It comes backward: i.e. David saw from life’s experience that being occupied and preoccupied with the good work of God had left no lack for such a person. That his/her favourites had already been lined up to be bestowed. That all that was truly best for the person was certainly coming searching after him. That there was no trying too hard for the joys of life. And that he spoke not looking into the distant future, hoping for an unfulfilled dream, but looking back at how no good thing had been withheld from the one who had walked in the fear of God.
